Prof Dr-Hab. Petar Sabev Varbanov

Sustainable Process Integration Laboratory – SPIL, NETME Centre, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Brno University of Technology – VUT Brno, Technická 2896/2, 616 69 Brno Czech Republic

Abstract

The lecture introduces Process Integration and its role in minimising and mitigating the costs – economic and environmental, of energy sourcing, supply, and use. The lecture starts with an overview of the energy and environmental issues of contemporary economies, providing the overall picture of energy supply and use. The main environmental footprints are also reviewed, explaining their meaning and usefulness.

The second part of the lecture focuses on how to maximise energy savings in the industry as the main vehicle to reduce emissions, footprints and costs. The principles of Process Integration are introduced and illustrated with realistic examples. Further information and reading are recommended for those who will be interested to pursue further the study and development of Process Integration.
