Abstract:

Net-zero energy buildings and communities, which in an average year produce as much energy as they consume, are receiving increasing interest and application. For instance, a major Canadian research initiative in this area in this area was launched several years ago with the creation of the NSERC Smart Net-zero Energy Buildings Research Network. Net-zero energy buildings and communities can contribute notably to energy sustainability in particular and sustainability in general. Nonetheless, there are obstacles and barriers to their adoption and growth. In this presentation, net-zero energy buildings and communities are discussed, along with the opportunities they provide, particularly as they relate to sustainability, and the associated challenges.
